Human Connections

The most important things in life are the connections you make with others — @tomford

Whilst connection with “self” is absolutely paramount in order to feel good, paradoxically, external connections are critical in order to make that link work. Why? B/c social connection can lower anxiety, depression, help us regulate our emotions, lead us to higher self-esteem, empathy & even improve our immune system. Interaction with one another & exchanging emotional feedback in a loop, is a biological need that humans have, as we have an innate requirement for such connection.

I felt this strongly on a recent trip to New Zealand, visiting “family-friends” who have helped shape me since my teenage years. Something very special happened when connecting with several generations together, sharing anecdotes from rich-in-life histories: it triggered a profound reciprocity entirely by talking about stories past. It reminded me that maintaining friendships as we go along in the hustle of life, is of extreme importance.

Bronnie Ware, a hospice nurse, wrote in her book called “The Top Five Regrets of the Dying”, that one of them is, “I wish I’d spent more time with friends.” She found that there were many deep regrets about not giving friends the attention that they deserved. In the end, it all comes down to love & relationships, b/c we take nothing with us when we die. So, opportunities for human connection, having a heart for making space to give signifiant people not just your time, but your attention & energy is key, as it will feed a connection to your INNER SELF. Family, friends, the ones who make life meaningful: they’re not just a part of your life, they ARE your life.

I believe that the importance for human connection is needed more today than ever. When we allow ourselves to listen with our hearts we are then able to be truly present. So, think back to the important people in your life. Is there someone you haven’t talked to in a long time that was a good friend or who played an important role in your life? Consider trying to get in touch again, as you may find it connects you back to who you really are.
