Regardless of external forces, time shows that Vietnamese artisans, past and present, have always retained many distinctively native characteristics over the centuries.
The profound talent of the Vietnamese is all around Hanoi but witnessing local Vietnamese artists creating their wares in local villages is literally “art in motion” – their craftsmanship is a true finesse. Hence, going off-the-beaten track out of the centre of Hanoi to visit incense makers, conical hatters, potters, calligraphers and lacquer artists in their respective villages is something worth spending a moment to look into, if you ever get the opportunity.
