Laugh at yourself: I DARE YOU. Albeit counter-intuitive vs. our instincts to protect our fragile egos, laughing at oneself leads to benefits.
Important however to distinguish between self-deprecation & self-reproach. In the former, you’re finding aspects of yourself to laugh at: imperfections, behaviours & suspect decisions etc. In the latter, you’re never feeling “good enough,” believing that you lack intrinsic & external qualities that relegate you to “less than” = it’s easy to feel underwhelmed, undeserving, unimportant, unappreciated & unloved = not so funny = watch for the difference.
THEREFORE, self-deprecation in laughing at yourself should never feel like your pouring salt in your wounds. On the contrary, laughing at yourself softens emotional wounds that maybe present. As such, this can help you to:
▪️TAKE BACK YOUR POWER: if you laugh at negative comments & don’t take them to heart, you demonstrate empowerment.
▪️HELP TO PRACTICE SELF-FORGIVENESS: laughing at yourself is a way to state that any mistakes you make are natural & forgivable.
▪️DIFFUSE STRESS & PAIN: Self-laughter triggers a release of endorphins, healthy neurotransmitters that will boost happiness & fight physical & emotional pain.
▪️MAKES YOU MORE ATTRACTIVE: joke about yourself & others will likely be drawn to you = magnetizing.
▪️HELPS YOU GAIN A SENSE OF CONFIDENCE & RESILIENCY: lifting our spirits helps us to move forward with our lives & navigate through the absurdities inherent in life. Such resiliency can only empower us further.
As such, laughter is vital to our sanity & longevity. It gives us strength, both spiritually & mentally. Moreover, scientific research shows that people who are able to laugh at themselves are much happier, so, I DARE YOU to #laugh
